Music Videos

LO: To explore this section of the unit and research chosen case studies

`Sk8ter Boi` - Avril Lavigne 2002

`Teenage Dirtbag` - Wheatus 2000

Sk8ter Boi

- Artist : Avril Lavigne
- Song : Skater Boy
- Genre : Pop punk , Rock & Pop
- Release Date UK : 28th October
- What is the song about : his is a story told from the singer's viewpoint about her rocker boyfriend and a girl he knew in high school who rejected him because he was a skateboarder and she was a snob. Five years later, the Sk8er Boi is famous and the girl who rejected him is living a boring, unfulfilled life, ruminating on a time when he was into her.

The music video for the song, directed by Francis Lawrence, features a concert on a city street with Lavigne singing on the hood of a car with a crowd rocking out around her. It was a success on Total Request Live and was voted one of the best music videos of the decade by BT TV. The song has been performed in all of Lavigne's concert tours to date.

- Who features in the video : Avril & other people

Teenage Dirtbag

- Group : Wheatus
- Song : Teenage Dirtbag
- Genre : Skater Rock
- Release Date UK : February 5th 2001
- What is the song about : It came from the summer of 1984 on Long Island, when I was 10 years old. That summer in the woods behind my house, there was a Satanic, drug-induced ritual teen homicide that went down; and the kid who did it was called Ricky Kasso, and he was arrested wearing an AC/DC T-shirt,

Skater Boy
The video centers around an impromptu concert held by Lavigne in a Los Angeles street intersection. It begins by showing several of Lavigne's friends and band members promoting the concert in advance via graffiti, flyers, email and posters. Lavigne and her band arrive at the location and begin performing on the roofs of their cars; a crowd quickly gathers. Towards the end of the song, police cars and a helicopter arrive to disperse the crowd, while Lavigne uses her guitar to break the car windshield. Lavigne then throws the guitar onto the road and looks up at the helicopter, where a shot was taken for the single's artwork.

Teenage Dirtbag

he music video for "Teenage Dirtbag", directed by Jeff Gordon,[13] is based on the 2000 film Loser, which the song features in, and tells a different story from the film based on the song's lyrics. Jason Biggs plays a nerdy character and Mena Suvari is the love interest who unexpectedly invites the protagonist to an Iron Maiden concert, and in the end scene they dance together on prom night.

In some cases, the beginning and the end of the video were deleted: The full version of the video begins with Jason falling asleep while doing his homework and ends with a large glitter ball falling from the ceiling and striking him on the head. He then wakes up, revealing his brief romance with Suvari to have been all a dream. The video was nominated for Best Video at the Kerrang! Awards.[14]

Dirt:

The live lounge appeals to the audience through using popular artists , trending songs and relating. An example of this is seen by interaction with Tom Grenan. This ensures that the Live Lounge targets will enjoy and relate to the content they are listening to. The audience targets between age 15-29 year olds , so they use emerging UK artists to interest them.

Offers a range of new music

. Play's a mixture of mainstream and new artists -->

. Stormzy mainstream but not as commercial genre (grime) But he played Beyonce?

Question 1:

. Who regulates radio in the UK? : Ofcom
. Who owns public radio?; national public radio inc
. What is public service broadcasting? : the advantage of the public
. What is the term meaning the merging of previously separate media forms in on entity?: ?

Question 2 :

One advantage of listening to music online is that you are able to fast forward , pause , rewind and skip music.

Question one:

1.) Media convergence

2.)

3.) The funding of the BBC is a tv licence

Question two:

One way of how radio stations target there audiences is that they play the music which is most known to that age range , for example Radio one plays the new trending music for the 15-29 year olds wheres as Radio 2 play the older songs for 30+. The radio live lounge also use emerging artists to attract their audience.

Question two:

. They play the correct music , for the correct audience

. They create advantages for the audiences

. they inform

Question three:

The BBC radio has to provide a wider range of content so that everyone who is a part of their audience will be included with the song choices. For example the live lounge is something different and when the people part of the audience hear the music they may enjoy what they're listening to and listen to it more.

Another an advantage to Radio because they have to include new emerging artists because they have a lot of money and therefore they are able to support new artists on the live lounge so the audience can also support the live music.

The narrative of teenage dirtbag , is the story of a boy who likes a girl who does not know him as he is classed as a loser. By the end the girl asks him to see a band with her and they dance all until , he wakes up on the stairs discovering that it was all a dream.

Mise-en-scene

. Setting

. Costume

. Props

. Lighting

. Hair & Make up

. Colour

. Performance

The mis-en-scene presents the singer as wealthy , we know this because of the diamonds , money and valuables pouring into the bathtub which connotes her wealth.

 Teenage dirtbag mis-en-scene :

Performance: Shows clips of the band "wheetus" performing there song , looking all down with the kids and cool.

Costume:

Wearing a coat , a flannel shirt , pale coloured tee-shirt and ushanka
hat.

However the girl is wearing a long-sleeved tee-shirt , has her tied up and is wearing golden hoop earrings.

Setting:

The setting of this is clearly a school hallway. We know this by the typical lockers going down the sides. Also the amount of people walking through the hallway indicates this is a school hallway.

We can see that this is a school gym or sports hall. By the flooring it looks like floor what people would play games such as basketball , which indicates a sports hall.

In this part of the music video , us the audience can define this is a school prom. By there costumes  etc dresses & suites. The lighting to , etc: deep blue & purples.

LO: To reflect on areas to improve in the assessment.

Question 1: Identify the word that describes a large company which owns a set of companies that produced different media forms. - Conglomerate

Question 1: Bauer Media owns radio systems as well as magazines. Identify the word that describes adding other areas of business in this way. - Diversification

Question 1: Identify one source of funding for BBC Radio 1 - TV licence

Model answers:

Question 2: Two marks would be given for the opening sentence , which explains how Radio stations target audiences. Two mark would be given for the following sentences , which exemplify different use of targeting in Radio 1 Live Lounge. 4 marks

Targets Q3: Make points about how the BBC Radio provide wider content on their radio stations, give examples on Radio 1 and why they have to do this linked to the remit.

1. - They don't have to attract a wide audience on radio one , however , they target 15-29 year olds. An example of this , is when they play new trendy music which will attract the young generation.

2. - Provides contemporary music currently released mainly. They offer a range of new music. The playlist used consist of up to date music.

3. - Live music , Provides a platform for live music so listeners can listen whenever. Live lounge ; Tom Grennan , Stormzy & Romy.

. BBC Radio provides a large range of music than commercial radios for  many reasons. First of Radio one provides contemporary music  currently  released. This example is due to the remit and in particular music used.

Wednesday 1st March 2023

the setting :

I think they used a seaside town to focus more on the fish.

LO: to examine the use of media language in music videos

prop - Skateboard , the skateboard prop can be linked back to the song 'skater boy' & to the theme of their costumes.

costumes - their costumes indicate them being a group of skaters

Avril Lavigne and her friends are dressed like a bunch of skater kids , we can tell Avril is a tomboy by her style etc sideways cap , a tie & spiked bracelets.

This is achieved by using the type of clothing. for example they used a side way cap and a tie.

This could suggest to the audience that the skater boy in the song is somewhat linked to her.

In Avril Lavigne's music video, it is set in a american city

We know this as we are show shots of tall buildings and many cars

<-- we can tell this guy is a geek because of his clothing type. He's wearing a big coat , a flannel jacket  and a trapper hat. This was considered un cool.

The music video for Avril Lavigne's skater boy and wheatus teenage dirtbag use setting and costume to achieve similar affects. For example in Skater boy , the group including Avril are wearing edgy , skater clothes to link bank to the song title and in teenage dirt bag they're wearing a variety of different styles to project the different type's of people at the high school etc ; geek ,popular, jock. The setting of skater boy is in a city & Teenage dirtbag a high school(jackson high). These are used effectively because they both link correctly with the songs , in skater boy the video pro casts illegal activity and by it being in the middle of a city it makes the narrative more obvious and in teenage dirtbag a high school is used because the title of the song includes the word 'teenage' and teenagers attend school so it would make sense for the setting to be a high school.

LO: To explore how camerawork is used to create meaning in music videos

1.) The camera shot type is a low shot & a canted angle.

2.) It's used to make the artist and her friends to look bigger as they are adults riding on children vehicle's. This might suggest the song is about childish behaviour.

3.) The artist is riding the most wealthy looking car , this to make her stand out.She is also wearing all red which also makes her stand out implicates she's the main one.

1.) Maybe its a desert of some sort.It looks dusty , lonely , isolated , warm & dry.

2.) Rhianna might be singing about being alone.

Teenage dirtbag - More naturalistic

Skater boy - Expressionistic

1.) Shot name: Extreme close up

Why used: To implicate that Avril is the star of the show.

Why used here: Because it matches the lyrics

2.) Shot name: Long shot / Wide shot

why used: To show how he's a loser

why used here: because it links with lyrics about being a teenage dirtbag.

3.) Shot name: High shot

why used: to see the audience around her

why used here:

4.) shot name: low angle

why used: to show his dominance as the jock

why used here:

5.) Shot name: close up

why used:

Close up: When she is singing to the camera you can see a use of a close up.

- Thrilled
- Excited
- Fast

-smooth
-chill
-natural

The camera movement in teenage dirtbag is a high angle , for example at one point in the video the people run over to see what the fuss is all about . The camerawork fits the tone of the song because its all about being rebellious & trashy.

The camera movement in teenage dirtbag is a mid shot angle , for example at one point in the video they are all walking through the hallway. The camera work fits the tone of the song because it is showing the differences between people at school.

The music video producers use camera work to help construct the identity of a band. In skater boy it is clearly shown that this group is a bunch of rebellious , reckless & stereo typical bunch of teenagers.We know this from scenes where they are running through car parks , running through cities , putting on a show in the city centre , jumping onto cars roofs and smashing instruments onto cars. This suggests they have no limits and are rebels.They use different camera shots etc;

LO: To explore how sound & editing are used to create meaning in music videos

Diegetic sounds: They are those inside the world of text (characters can hear music too)

Non Diegetic: The characters cant hear the music only the audience.

Teenage Dirtbag: The only diegetic sound we hear is the car hitting the bike , then the bike falls over.

Skater boy is diegetic by the siren noises , smashing window and helicopter noises

Editing

Teenage dirtbag

- Warp at the beginning telling us he's having a dream
- Slow mo of girl to put focus on her
- Scene of soft focus , slow mo to yet again place focus on her
- The mirror ball at the end shows the end of the dream to remind us none of this was reality.

You could mention the use of editing skills , the sound , the image of the artist.

In teenage dirtbag they pro cast how one student is different from everybody else and in skater boy it shows how a group of friends are all the same.

- expressionistic
- naturalistic
- mi en scene

Music videos use camera work to differ from other music videos so therefore their music video is a unique one. In Teenage dirtbag the use of camera work is very different to skater boy , in teenage dirtbag they use naturalistic camera work to produce their art. Its all very slow timed and natural. Their use of camera angles do indeed mostly stay the same (mid-shot) by the end they have a 90 degree angle shot  of the mirror ball falling onto the loser. Although in skater boy it is the complete opposite very expressionate  , a lot of fast moving and multiple changes through camera shots like close-up shot , mid shots , long shots,  etc.

Exam Question

MUSIC VIDEOS:

NOTES: good notes on both case studies

MEDIA LANGUAGE EXAMPLE Qs:
WWW: excellent use of terminology and you explain the effect of the elements used.
EBI: make sure you are using specific, detailed examples from the videos to support your ideas

DIRT:
Where is it? It should be in pink.

4 mark Question

Compare how gender representations are constructed in music videos.
Refer to two music videos you have studied to support your answer.

- must talk about about both music videos you have studied.
- talk about male or females
- could mention the stereotypical / un-stereotypical

In the music video "Skater Boi" gender representations are presented as un-stereotypical , we know this from different things throughout the music video. For example the main singer (Avril Lavigne) representation is presented by her clothing choice ; she is wearing a side way cap , baggy t-shirt , spiked bracelets & a tie. The style she is wearing is known as a skater style and this is un-stereotypical from the media industry when showing a feminine character in music videos. However in "Teenage dirtbag" the gender representation in women is very stereo typical. Noel (the main girl) is show wearing a preppy outfit , flowy hair , pretty and dreamy. We can tell the creator wanted noel to be a typical stereo type to make her character make sense.

10 mark Question

Explain how stereo-types are used in music videos. Refer to two music videos you have studied to support your answer. [10]

Stereotypes are used in music videos because they are easily recongnizable and so help the audience  understand the narrative. For example, in Sk8ter Boi, they use sterotypical representation of males as active , rule-breakers and interested in girls. This is shown through them often skating, biking or driving, often in places they shouldn't be (like on roof-tops), and filming the pretty girl in the car. This fits in with the teenage stereotypes also used.In sk8ter boi the teenagers are presented as a rebellious group. We know this from when the group are shown running through  areas where they aren't aloud , doing a band in the middle of the city and smashing cars. This is all a stereo type that all teenagers "break rules". This has an effect on how modern day teenagers are perceived and may even cause problems for some. Although in there is a stereotype of boys in teenage dirtbag. It shows men being "leader' of the school , being tough , all the women going to them and being jocks. The effect on this may make boys think they have to be like this to be respected or liked. The connotations usually include tall , blonde , wearing a red jacket which represents them being in some sort of sport team. Another stereo type of teenage dirtbag is the highschool. It is shown as a very typical school. The long hallway with long lockers going across , a cafeteria & all white students. The affect on this may make other races feel uninvited to schools like this.
